The original source of phosphorus in the manufacture of phosphate fertilizers in early days was bones, but the supply was soon exhausted. Today, rock phosphate is the only important raw material for phosphate fertilizers. The earth is richly endowed with phosphate. There are two types of phosphate deposits: igneous and sedimentary.

The phosphate content of phosphate rock (or phosphate grade) varies widely from 4% to 20% phosphorus pentoxide (P 2 O 5). Commercial phosphate rocks are enriched ("enriched") with P 2 O 5 of at least 28% and often more than 30%. This is done by cleaning, sieving, descaling, magnetic separation or flotation.

Hanna and Anazia (1990) developed a flotation process to separate carbonates from sedimentary phosphate ores using fatty acids at pH 4-6 without any preliminary conditioning. This process was based on the fact that fatty acids are adsorbed faster on the surface of carbonates compared to phosphates.

Although the technical literature contains abundant references on applications of starch in mineral processing, the majority is not concerned with phosphate mineral systems. Nevertheless, the interaction between starch and apatite surfaces is relevant to both selective flocculation and flotation of phosphate ores. The main objective of this thesis is to investigate in detail such interaction ...

Anionic flotation of calcite from a calcareous siliceous sedimentary phosphorite was successfully conducted at pH 4.5 after natural depression of phosphate without any addition of phosphoric acid. Raising the pH to 9, flotation of phosphate proceeds leaving silica in the bottom of the flotation cell without using silica depressant.

Generalized sedimentary deposit (Florida) Phosphate ore deposits, whether igneous or sedimentary, consist of calcium phosphate minerals ⠀. Sedimentary PR is s൯metimes called phosphorite. These deposits are found throughout the geologic time scale and were formed in ancient continental shelf marine environments.

Froth flotation is the most important and versatile mineral dressing or processing technique. It permits the mining of low-grade complex ore bodies which would have otherwise termed as uneconomic. This is a selective process used in which specific separation is achieved from complex ore such as lead-zinc and copper-zinc.

Phosphate was first discovered in Jordan at the turn of the present century during the excavation of railroad cuts in the Ruseifa and El Hassa areas. In 1977 these two areas are still the sites of the total present phosphate mining in Jordan. Underground mining methods were used at both sites in the past but currently all mining is open pit.

Abstract The beneficiation of phosphate ores containing carbonate gangue by conventional techniques such as physical separation methods or flotation is very difficult due to the similarities in physico-chemical properties of constituent minerals present in the system. Carbonate-rich phosphate deposits can be processed by calcination and by selective acid leaching methods. However, calcination ...
